The CEO of a Mining Company That Sold 20,000 Bitcoin Explained Why He’s Moving Away from BTC

Fred Thiel, CEO of MARA, one of the world’s largest publicly traded Bitcoin mining companies, appeared on journalist Natalie Brunell’s Coin Stories program and made noteworthy comments about cryptocurrency mining, the future of Bitcoin, and strategies for moving towards artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. One of the most critical topics highlighted in the interview was the process of Bitcoin miners shifting their energy infrastructure to AI data centers. Thiel stated that AI data centers generate significantly higher revenue per unit of electricity consumed compared to Bitcoin mining. Thiel stated that MARA has over 4 gigawatts (GW) of energy capacity and that they will continue to mine Bitcoin at the facilities until the infrastructure is transformed into AI data centers, adding that the two areas can be managed flexibly together. “Your biggest cost item is electricity. AI companies pay much more per electron compared to mining. But we can continue mining Bitcoin until the electricity is transferred to the data center.” Related News: Experts Say 80 Percent of the Bitcoin Bear Market Is Over—Here’s What You Need to Know Thiel, who said he hasn’t lost faith in Bitcoin but has reframed his perspective, stated that Bitcoin’s biggest shortcoming as an asset is its lack of return. He said that unless there are geopolitical crises or severe inflationary pressures, Bitcoin will be a balanced store of value indexed to inflation, rather than experiencing “unrealistic” extreme price increases. Referring to the company’s sale of approximately 20,000 Bitcoin reserves, Thiel stated that MARA is not a “digital asset treasury company,” and that holding Bitcoin is considered part of a cash management strategy. The proceeds from the sale were used to repay discounted bonds and alleviate debt burden. *This is not investment advice.
